FPL power plant in Hendry county

An application will be voted on today by the Commissioners of Hendry County, Florida to permit yet another Florida Power and Light (FPL) power plant to be constructed in our region. Unlike the two new nuclear generators we recently wrote about (Turkey Point - on the shores of Biscayne Bay and adjacent to Biscayne National Park), this new application (the “Hendry County Clean Energy Center” – 3,750 Megawatts of natural gas generation plus a small amount of solar) concerns the potential loss of approximately 3,000 acres of primary habitat for the critically endangered Florida panther. nukes v renewables

This article captures the essential argument about nukes v renewables. Florida law currently does not allow for the fulfillment of the implied potential for distributed generation expansion. This must, MUST, be changed! If the links do not work, please see the web version:

Opinion: Ammendment 5 & 6

For years, Florida elections have been rigged so the outcome in many races are determined before candidates even sign up to run. In November, Florida voters sent a loud and clear message to Tallahassee: politicians must not draw their own districts to favor themselves or their parties. A supermajority of 63% of Floridians voted to place Fair Districts –  Amendments 5 and 6 – into our Constitution.

But that’s not good enough for Gov. Scott, who is now working to delay Fair Districts.

Singing in the Rain A discussion in response to a spate of nasty angry messages, aimed at keeping the focus where I think it belongs, on the inter-generational unfairness of not dealing with human-made climate change. ~Jim
