Attached is the agenda for the February 15, 2012 Joint Working Group (WG) and Science Coordination Group (SCG) Meeting. The meeting is scheduled from 1:00 – 5:30 PM in the Orchid Ballroom at the Coral Springs Marriott located at 11775 Heron Bay Blvd. in Coral Springs, FL 33076. There is no block of hotel rooms associated with this meeting.
 
Please note that this is the day after the SCG sponsored workshop on February 13 and 14.

Florida Coastal and Ocean Coalition

The Florida Coastal and Ocean Coalition (Coalition) is a group of organizations working together to conserve, protect
and restore Florida’s coastal and marine environments. The Coalition emphasizes the need for an ecosystem-based
approach to coastal and ocean management, and recognizes the important linkages between the health of Florida’s
economy, and the health of its beaches, dunes, coral reefs, mangroves, oyster reefs, sea grasses, salt marshes and
other coastal natural resources. The Coalition calls on Florida’s governor, state agencies, Cabinet, Legislature and

Audubon Florida Applauds Restoration Project Milestone and Urges Immediate Congressional Approval
The C-111 Spreader Canal western project will increase freshwater flows to Florida Bay.
Miami, FL – Last week the Army Corps of Engineers chief signed off on the C-111 Spreader Canal Western project, completing the last step before presenting to Congress for approval of this longtime Audubon priority. Audubon urges immediate Congressional action for final approval.
“This critical project can now be included in legislation required to advance implementation,” said Megan Tinsley, Everglades Policy Associate for Audubon Florida. “If this project is operated to achieve ecological benefits such as revived wildlife populations, we will demonstrate that successful restoration of the Everglades is possible.”

A Central Everglades Planning Project (CEPP) workshop sponsored by the South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Task Force's Science Coordination Group (SCG) will be held Feb. 13 and 14 from 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the South Florida Water Management District Headquarters in the Governing Board Auditorium, Building B-1, 3301 Gun Club Road, West Palm Beach, FL 33406.

Caloosahatchee Condition Report

 This week’s Caloosahatchee Condition Report, submitted on behalf of the west coast participants on the Corps periodic scientists phone call, to provide scientific information about the condition of the Caloosahatchee and estuary. 

 
Pulse releases averaged only 308 cfs the past week. Surface salinity at Ft Myers increased from 12.9 to 15 psu, salinity at Beautiful Island/I75 was 8.1  psu and the Franklin Lock (S79) salinity dropped to 3.7 psu. The salinity at Ft Myers has exceeded the 30 day MFL moving average for the past 37 days establishing the 5th consecutive year of MFL exceedences.

* The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Jacksonville District received a signed Chief of Engineers Report (Chief's Report) for the C-111 Spreader Canal Western Project in Miami-Dade County, Fla., Jan. 30, 2012. The Chief's Report, signed by Acting Chief of Engineers Maj. Gen. Merdith W.B. Temple, has been submitted to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works for review. Following review by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), it will then be submitted to Congress for authorization. MIAMI — The U.S. is not ready to handle an oil spill if drilling off the Cuban coast goes awry but can be better prepared with monitoring systems and other basic steps, experts told government officials Monday.
The comments at a congressional subcommittee hearing in the Miami Beach suburb of Sunny Isles come more than a week after a huge oil rig arrived in Cuban waters to begin drilling a deepwater exploratory well.
