I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the
finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this
is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you
three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

A Living Being by Shari Anker

A Living Being

The Everglades is a living being with a metabolism.
Its metabolism is what gives it a pulse,
It enables it to be a living system.
Without a pulse it’s dead.
Open up the flood gates
Let the waters circulate
Inject no more poisons
Assure its vegetation flourishes
Then will the pulse return
And the Everglades can breathe again.
There’s more to do
But remember living systems
Do their best work themselves
Self-organizing
Self-regulating
Self-renewing
Honor the Everglades as a living being
With needs all its own
And we will be rewarded
With the sustenance
On which our lives depend.
