Another Oil rig burns in Gulf

An Oil Rig Burns, Blanketing the Gulf With Angst
By CAMPBELL ROBERTSON

NEW ORLEANS — An oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico caught fire on Thursday morning, forcing its 13 crew members overboard and sending
waves of anxiety along a coast that has just begun to recover from the Deepwater Horizon disaster.
By early evening, the workers had been rescued with no serious injuries reported and the fire had been put out. Coast Guard officials said
that no oil could be seen on the water near the platform, contradicting an earlier report.
In another year, the blaze may not have garnered much attention; it might have been seen as one of the scores of fires and explosions
that occur on offshore platforms in the gulf every year....more

USC: Defend EPA's role in Climate Change

Defend the EPA's Ability to Protect Our Health and Environment
Dear UCS Supporter,
You were probably as disappointed as I was when the Senate failed to pass comprehensive climate and energy legislation before leaving for August recess.
While comprehensive legislation remains critical, we now are counting on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to do its job
to protect our health and the environment by reducing the heat-trapping emissions that cause global warming. In 2009, the EPA
found that global warming emissions endanger public health and welfare. According to the Supreme Court, this finding means that the agency
must limit these pollutants under the Clean Air Act
Unfortunately, some members of Congress, with the backing of the coal, oil, and electric utility industries,
are attempting to block the EPA from cutting these emissions.

I heard from nearly 18,000 Floridians who responded to my recent survey stemming from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
The action wanted by the most people was getting Congress to act quickly on measures designed to ease our dependence on oil. I couldn't agree more.

Our government must enact a national program to transition us from petroleum to alternative and synthetic fuels--
and we need to act with the same urgency that led us to reach the moon within the 1960s. We also need more solar, wind and
thermal energy, and safer nuclear power. Survey Results Keep oil rigs away from states like Florida that rely on tourism, fishing and beach-front economies.
