Orange says no to Econ development bid
Commissioners fear impact of 5,000 homes near sensitive river
By David Damron, Orlando Sentinel
Orange County Commissioners voted 6-1 Tuesday night to reject a plan to build 5,000 residences east of the sensitive Econlockhatchee River.
The majority feared the impacts that could result from building a small new city in a rural area next to a protected waterway.
The Rybolt family wanted to build those homes over two decades, along witjh more than 2 million square-feet of office, retail
and research park space, promising to use techniques that would curb energy and water use.
Another key part of the 1,415-acre plan was a road leading west to the University of Central Florida with a multi-lane bridge over
the Econ, a state-designated Outstanding Florida Water.
