Great White Heron

Ran across my old buddy the Great White Heron the
other day. Hadn't seen him for quit sometime. Well, actually, I haven't been to
his neck of the woods or down his canal (as they say here!) Anyway, I
thought I would place him with a photo of the White Egret, or Great Egret as it
is called, so you can see the difference just in case you run across one
yourself. The quickest way to tell is the color of their legs, the Egret's
are black. Second, and a little more difficult, is their heads. The Heron's is
larger and longer. The bills can be somewhat similar but usually the
Egrets bill is mostly yellow and the Heron's has some black. However,
during breeding season that's not always true. The best and
fastest way to tell though is as I said, check their
legs .

Enjoy,
