NOAA Florida Freshwater Resource Project  

Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve was awarded $815,000 in early 2012 for a three-year project to address freshwater allocation and management, focused on the Henderson Creek watershed. Learn more here.

Adventure Race Day Set

Save the date for the 3rd Annual Rookery Bay Adventure Race sponsored by Up A Creek Kayak Tours: Dec. 8. Registration for the 3k kayak and 4k trail run opens Oct. 1.

Summer Evening Lecture Series

Following our "Whale Tales" summer theme, we scheduled 5 evening lectures about marine mammals. Three remain, including two this month. Doors open at 5:30 pm for wine and cheese followed by the speaker from 6 to 7 pm. Cost is $8/members, $10/non-members. July 26 -- Wayne Hasson, president of Oceans for Youth Foundation and co-founder of Aggressor Fleet, presents "Fascinating Humpback Whale Facts."
 
Aug 15 -- Kati Therriault, a manatee research biologist with FWC, presents "Manatee Response, Recovery and Research."

Calendar of Events

The Environmental Learning Center is open Monday through Friday now through October 30 and Saturdays from Nov. through April.
 
Wednesdays (9 to 11 am) - Guided Kayak Trips of Rookery Bay, Henderson Creek and mangrove tunnels. Fee for two-hour excursion is $45 ($40 members); includes equipment, instruction and learning center admission. Details.
 
Through Sept. 7 -- "Ocean's Edge: The Corridor of Life" art exhibit by Tampa artist Sigrid Tidmore. Most works, plus related books and designed items, are for sale in the Gift Shop.
