The Fakahatchee Strand, the remote wilderness preserve east of Marco Island and north of Everglades City, is largely devoid of human inhabitants. Nevertheless, the area has a colorful history, including Native Americans, captains of industry like Henry Ford and Barron Collier, real estate speculation, and even the New York Times bestseller list.

Dramatic drop in deer population closing part of Big Cypress hunting season

A dramatic decline in the size of the deer herd in part of the Big Cypress National Preserve has scientists puzzled and hunters worried. The National Park Service has been tallying the drop-off for the past decade in the preserve’s southernmost region, a wet wilderness known as the Stairsteps Unit for its jagged shared boundary with Everglades National Park south of U.S. 41.

UPDATE: Snook fishing closed until next September in Southwest Fla.

Anglers won't be able to keep a snook in Southwest Florida until September 2011 under rules approved today by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Catch and release still would be allowed under the rule.
